Earlier this year the Channel team raised £500 when they held a Euro’s 2021 sweepstake. The worthy recipients were of course Channel’s charity partner, Young Bristol who were in need of kayaks for the children participating in the outdoor activities programme.
Young Bristol provides a range of outdoor activities for a wide variety of groups and ages from the water-based activity centre and other locations, in and around Bristol. Children attending the activities come from a varied background, some of which are on the poverty line.
The activities provided by Young Bristol not only offer the children the opportunity to meet new friends, but it also gives them the ability to learn new skills and build confidence. As the young people grow within the programmes they have access to course and qualifications with success stories ranging from young adults travelling the world with employment.
This donation of equipment will be used by young people ages 8 – 25 who engage with Young Bristol’s Kayak Club, Outdoor Employment Programme and Holiday Clubs, as well as by schools and community groups who bring local young people to the charities Outdoor Activity Centre on the harbourside.
Many young people sadly lack access to sporting and physical activities, which is why outdoor pursuits is central to Young Bristol’s programmes. A vital tool in supporting young people to build new skills and gain qualifications, whilst taking part in new and unique experiences.
Outdoor pursuits also benefits young peoples’ mental health, with a young person sharing,
“I really love attending the Kayak Club as I find it a break from reality, and can leave all my problems and worries at home.”
Not only will the equipment support local young people, but will also benefit older generations, with the charity delivering weekly sessions to a group of 12 participants as part of their Over 55s Watersports Club since 2019.
During 2019 – 20, Young Bristol’s Outdoor Activity Programme delivered 413 sessions with 5,162 contacts with children and young people.
